"What are the components of a life worth living?

How can we get more from ourselves and others without resorting to coercive systems of reward and punishment?

What is my life’s purpose and how do I fulfill it?

How does culture shape the self?

What factors shape the experience of the modern self?

How can I transcend my limits, and be a more complete person?

How can the justice system, schools and healthcare systems be vehicles to promote mental health and human betterment?"

These Questions and more will be the focus of the Social Living Conference.

On October 23rd and 24th of this year, the Milwaukee Affiliate for Social Living  (MASL) will be hosting it’s two day conference at Mt. Mary University.  The conference will serve as a coming together of mental health professionals, researchers, mindfulness professionals, and interested learners for two days of learning, training, and networking.

The theme of the conference will be “The Art and Science of Social Living”, with presenters from a broad array of backgrounds speaking to aspects of mental health and social wellness.   The vast and compelling set of presentations is open to the public, with interested learners strongly encouraged to participate in the event’s numerous presentations and workshops.

Here are some highlights of the upcoming conference:

Jon Carlson- Keynote Speaker (October 24th, 9:20am-11:20am)
Jon Carlson’s long and illustrious career has brought him into contact with some of our time’s most notable influences upon the practice of counseling and psychotherapy.  His video series, Psychotherapy with the Experts, has become the training staple for a generation of psychologists and counselors. Dr. Carlson’s numerous books on psychotherapy and related areas are fun and accessible, and the wisdom and insight his work brings to the field provide levity and clarity.

At the conference, Dr. Carlson will bring his varied experience and his mastery of Adlerian theory in speaking to aspects of mental wellness and it’s relationship to our shared social experience.   Dr. Carlson will offer his wit and wisdom in this interactive and informative keynote address, tailored to an audience curious to learn components of healthy living and the promotion of happier, healthier society.

How can we overcome personal and circumstantial limits to meet our personal life potential?  What do our relationships with the world around us and others have to do with our subjective physical and psychological wellness?  What are we to do when confronted with those all-too common experiences of despair and loneliness?  Dr. Carlson will expand upon his views on Individual Psychology to offer applicable perspectives that we can carry forward into our daily life and work.In the end, participants will walk away with a living example of an active and contributing life, which has overcome illness, set backs, and discouragement, in a quest to be a better, fuller human.

Persons interested in becoming familiar with Dr. Carlson’s numerous contributions to the field, may be directed to some of his great works and collaborations.  His contributions to the professional fields of psychotherapy and counseling are evidenced in works such as The Mummy at the Dinning Room Table (with Jeffery Kottler), Never Be Lonely Again (with Pat Love), and Adlerian Therapy (Carlson, Watts, and Maniacci).  In his productive life, Carlson has authored over 55 books (and counting!) and has contributed to production of over 300 videos on psychotherapy!  Check out this great clip where Jon talks about listening:

Child Guidance Track (October 24th)
Participants in the conference will also have ample opportunity to gain practical perspectives and understanding on the age old task of child guidance.  In a world growing in complexity vexed with social threats and risks, it can be difficult to comprehend what we can do to help shape the development of healthy, confident, and contributing youth.  Always, there seems to be no shortage or advice regarding what NOT to do with regards to child guidance, but rarely does this leave us with a clear understanding of what our youth need from us. Admittedly, many of us find ourselves limited by factors both personal and circumstantial, in a world that can feel beyond our capacity to sufficiently understand and manage.  Yet we carry in us, the desire to be more and do more for the youth who depend on our availability and guidance.  Understanding the formidable task associated with child guidance, the Social Living Conference will be offering a series of three presentation/trainings on the topic.

This year, the Social Living Conference is pleased to welcome the insights and contributions of Dr. Melissa Kraemer Smothers, child guidance expert Deb Pysno, and MASL members Dr. Ben Rader and Elishia Pullman in a three-part series on child guidance.  These interactive workshops open to the community, will offer insights, understanding, and skills to equip a broad range of professionals and community members a clearer understanding of the needs of our youth.  If you a parent, foster parent, concerned family member, or group home worker, this series of workshops will be enlightening and encouraging.   However, the curriculum and activities will also provide clearer understanding and insight to professionals supporting others in the task of child guidance, including care coordinators, educators, foster agencies, human service workers, as well as parent coaches and parent support professionals.

Restoration of the Spirt (October 24th, 1:30 - 5pm)
The Klamath tribe, like so many other Native American groups, has experienced its share of social hardships and atrocities in the form of overt oppression/anhialation and coercive systems and social agents.  The weight of a history including foreign invasion, persecution, and marginalization, has rendered this once free people to a marginalized existence in the reservation system.

On October 24th, we will be provided an opportunity to explore the noble and life-affirming efforts of the Klamath people and mental health professionals, to reclaim a cultural heritage and history, that has offered tribe members hope for renewed existence in the face of personal despondence and systemic  marginalization.  From the state of Oregon, MASL is proud to host our out of town guests from Klamath Health & Family Services, as they share with us their approach to promoting better life outcomes for the Klamath people, through the embracing of a Tribal Best Practice approach to promoting optimal life outcomes through the  promotion of culture, community, and wellness.

Meditation Workshop (October 24th, 1:30pm-5:00pm)
Inside each of us, is the natural capacity for goodness.  This is a basic principle of the Shambhala approach to meditation.   Founded on centuries old practice, Shambhala meditation is practiced across the globe.  Shambhala meditation purports a rich and fascinating history, tracing its lineage back to specific teachings of Buddha.   In Milwaukee, the Shambhala tradition endures through the work of the Shambhala Meditation Center of Milwaukee.  The Shambhala Meditation Center of Milwaukee remains active and vital in its sharing of Shambhala practices and techniques.

On October 24th, the Shambhala Meditation Center of Milwaukee will offer
participants in the Social Living Conference a unique opportunity to develop and foster good human society and individual wellness through this ancient practice of turning inward.   Under the teaching of Buddhist Minister, Deborah Zarate, and professor of theology, Dr. Steven Shipee, this workshop will offer a unique opportunity for professionals and community members alike develop methods to connect body, heart, and wisdom. This renewing workshop will introduce practices that can be readily applied to personal growth and professional development.
